"Self aware" my ass, the man is a hack. Good guy i'm sure, but he didn't know what the fuck he was doing. The story is FULL of references from better shit, dude literally has MARIO in the story as a Doctor. A street called "Tattooine."
CLEARLY Kohei is a fanboy of western ideas but did not know what he was adapting when he copied that homework.
That's like ridiculing the color blue, but the visual motif of the entire story is blue anyway. You're not a genius for pointing out the trope exists, you get props for doing something different FROM the thing you're referencing as a bad thing or at least try to expand what you have.
So far, the movies have done a better job treating deku as the main character than Horikoshi's himself.
